News for Feb. 2004

Anniversary time!

Greetings, all!

Well, it's been a complete year now, since the Piedmont Freethought Association had its first official meeting. During that time, we've grown well, and had some very good times. Our Summer Solstice picnic was a terrific experience -- though I learned that I need to make arrangements of this nature at least 3 months in advance -- and our Winter get-together was pretty good, too. Hopefully, we'll be able to build on our successes in the coming year.

Monthly meeting notes

Our monthly meeting for January (Jan. 11) was a small, cozy affair. I got e-mails from a few members, saying they were too sick to show up. At least one member told me that she forgot about the meeting. I normally send out reminders a few days in advance of an event, but it slipped my mind last week. I'll see about automating this function, if possible.

This month's discussion started out about "life in the closet." The folks who were there enjoyed the discussion, but it quickly switched around to discussions about the fun Freethinkers experience in the course of being parents.

At present, we do not have a topic for our February meeting, so if anyone wants to volunteer to do a short talk for us, leading to a discussion for the group, please let me know.

Outing Ideas

We need to discuss ideas for a group field trip. The last attempt we had to go to the Three Colleges Observatory got washed out by an ice storm. I think that maybe a March evening would be a little more fun. Let's plan to take a look at our calendars when we meet and choose a night to go out.

Another possible idea was recently floated by Mike Warren, regarding a play being put on at Wake Forest University. It's called "Monkey Business," a new, humorous look at the Scopes "Monkey" Trial. The cost is $12 for adults, $5 for kids. If you're interested in sitting with the group for the Sunday Matinee show on Feb. 22, please bring your money for the tickets you want to our meeting on Sunday. One of our members (probably Mike) will handle buying a block of tickets for us. Further details will be worked out at the meeting.

Next meeting:

The next meeting of the PFA will be Sunday, Feb 8 at 4:00 at the Unitarian Church of Greensboro. Please call me if you need directions. My cell phone number is 336-686-3742.
