Quote of the month: "Life is but a momentary glimpse of the wonder of this astonishing universe, and it is sad to see so many dreaming it away on spiritual fantasy." [Carl Sagan] |
Well, we have made it through a second year of existence as a group. It has been a time of impressive events and good growth for us. I'm looking forward to our third year. I think it'll be exciting!
This month, the PFA decided to try out a new means of advertising our existence to the local area. At our meeting, we gathered donations to sponsor WFDD, the NPR station at Wake Forest University. With the money we gathered, we were able to purchase four announcements on the show "All Things Considered." Our announcements were scheduled for each of the 4 Fridays in January. In conjunction with this effort, I added a stat counter to the group web site. Using the counter's graphs, it has turned out that each week, on Friday and Saturday, the web site has experienced a slight uptick in hits. None of the folks who visit have e-mailed us yet, but at least people are hearing about us.
Since such an effort is pretty expensive (our 4 announcements cost the treasury $260), it seems that it would be a good idea to wait a while for other purchases. Perhaps in April, we might consider another set of purchases, maybe buying 2 announcements per Friday. It's something to think about, anyway.
In January, Colette Abegglen suggested that the PFA might be able to get some free publicity by volunteering to answer phones at a PBS fundraiser. Several folks responded positively, so I looked into the idea. Consequently, I have arranged for us to help out on Sunday, February 27 between 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM. I initially said that we could provide 8 such volunteers, but the lady at the station asked if I would like to reserve room for 15. Which could be revised down if I really couldn't get that level of help.
So -- I need to hear from folks. What we're talking about is a definite commitment to come out and volunteer to sit in front of some TV cameras and answer phones. I understand that snacks are provided, which would be a big plus, I bet. In any event, if you can make the date, please e-mail me so I can put together a FIRM roster of folks for this event. As several people have said, this will be a good chance to show local PBS viewers that Freethinkers don't have horns. And for any of you who do have them, I'll be sure to provide a nice, warm toboggan to cover up with. {;-)
Our next meeting will be at the Unitarian church on Sunday, Feb 13. If anyone wants to suggest a topic for discussion, that'd be terrific.
As always, be sure to write me if you have any questions. Take care, and I'll be looking forward to seeing everyone this month!
