News for Jan. 2005

Quote of the month:

"If it turns out that there is a God, I don't think that he's evil. But the worst that you can say about him is that basically he's an underachiever."

[Woody Allen]

Happy New Year! We've had a fine start to the winter so far, and after a couple of weeks out of circulation, I expect we're all ready to get going for another year of life in the South.

December notes:

The group met as usual on the second Sunday of the month, but it was pretty thinly attended. I guess that a combination of holiday travel and anticipation of the Winter Solstice dinner served to depress our numbers. However, we did get some important work done. We agreed on the idea of doing a preliminary run of announcements for the PFA on WFDD in January, and we raised a good amount of cash to pay into the effort. More on that later.

On Dec 19, many of us met at Ham's in Greensboro to celebrate the Winter Solstice and have a nice evening chatting amongst ourselves. We had well over a dozen folks show up, coming from both the east and west, so the central location turned out to be a good idea, though I understand that some folks were less than enchanted with the quality of the food. I apologize for that. My guess is that in the future, we ought to have such arrangements made by a social committee -- my choices over the last couple of years having turned out to be less than ideal. We'll discuss this sometime later this year, I suppose.

January notes

All through the month of January, the PFA will have a set of announcements aired on WFDD. Every Friday afternoon, there will be one announcement made that we are helping support WFDD and inviting folks to visit our web site. Since we have paid for only 1 announcement per Friday during the "All Things Considered" show, you may have to listen carefully. But the folks who were working on this project agreed that it would be a good test to see whether the cost ($260 for the 4 call-outs) would raise awareness, and by how much. We will be installing a counter in the web site's home page to try and gauge whether we see an increase in hits after the ads.

Our next meeting will be at the Unitarian church on Sunday, Jan 9. I'd like to discuss an issue that cropped up over the past month -- the attacks on science education by creationists, as exemplified by Charlie Liebert.

As always, be sure to write me if you have any questions. Take care, and I'll be looking forward to seeing everyone this month!
