Quote for the month: To rule by fettering the mind
through fear of punishment in another world, is just as base as to
use force.

First off, I'd like to apologize for failing to get a newsletter out to everyone last month. Vacation, illnesses, etc. got in the way. June was a pretty good month for us, what with a fun regular monthly meeting, and an afternoon out at the park for a picnic. We saw some new faces there, made friends with a squirrel, and enjoyed a fine, sunny day. Many weren't able to attend, though. Something about travel and Father's Day, from what we heard. Oh well...
July's meeting was somewhat thinly populated, but Wayne Aiken brought some cool-looking books to donate to our library (don't worry, Rachel and Cheryl... they were just a few paperbacks). The folks who attended were treated to a warm discussion centering around "Fahrenheit 9/11." I say the discussion was warm because the A/C wasn't working very well. Yep, warm was the word. But there you go... no doubt things will be better for August.
One thing that we discussed at the picnic (again) was the need of our group to create a logo of some description. This would be quite useful, in making business cards to hand to folks, posters to plaster around local places of interest, and tee-shirts to wear when we go on field trips. For those who are of an artistic bent, any help along those lines will be of lasting value to the future of our organization. It'll give us a "face," so to say.
At our July meeting, we discussed the idea of getting together at some point in the next month or so for a day trip to the Asheboro Zoo. This would be a chance for some to make their first visit to see the new Australia exhibit, and others to make their first trip out there ever. A day there would be very reasonable - $10 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, students and kids 2-12. There are picnic facilities there, so food would not be a major expense, as it is at some places. If you're interested in going, e-mail me and let me know when you'd like to go, and we'll see if we can build a consensus.
Also, Colette Abegglen has once again offered to host an afternoon movie/potluck party at her home. She says that Sept 11, 12, 25 or 26 are all possible dates. Our regular meeting that month will be Sept 12. So please e-mail me, and let me know what date would work best for you. We have a copy of "Inherit the Wind" (the original version with Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly), but if someone wants to offer something different, please let us know. We'll discuss the feedback that is received, and finalize plans for this at our August meeting.
Our next meeting will be on Sunday, August 8 at 4:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro. I hope everyone can make it!
