Spring is in full swing, and I believe that the Piedmont Freethought Association is getting ready for some expansion. One can always hope!
Our April monthly meeting was held on Easter Sunday, a fact that appears to have gained the notice of some of my theist friends. I had to remind them that it was just the second Sunday, and had nothing to do with their Special Day. Anyway, we sat and watched the Creationism episode of "Penn & Teller's Bullshit." We all had a good time with that. The meeting was enhanced by visits from a couple of new faces, which is always fun.
The suggestion was made that we try to get together a little more frequently, for social purposes. Luckily, an opportunity for this came up almost immediately, in the form of an invitation from Colette and her husband, to join them at their home for a potluck meal and a movie.
Another idea that was put forward was for some folks to get together to create a logo for the PFA... something we can put on t-shirts and business cards. This would make gathering for trips or meetings outside the church easier. Not to mention making it possible for us to advertise our presence in the area. Volunteers for the task will be most welcome!
I will be working this week to reserve a shelter in the Greensboro area for our June 19 Summer Solstice picnic. My first choice, Oka T Hester park is unavailable. So I'm guessing Hagan Stone will be the place for the second year in a row. What the heck... the rent on the shelter is reasonable and the surroundings are ideal. My only request is that we try to refrain from Bible Tossing games.
Another idea has occurred to me, thanks to the kindness of Tony Hegwood. He loaned me a book last month, about the life of William Smith, the Father of modern Geology. From this, and other events over the past month, I got a notion. What if we pooled our books that relate to Freethought together into a PFA library? I have a good number of books that I would be willing to lend while I'm around. I expect other have collections that could help out other members with interesting information.
Since I am already swamped with running the group and handling the web site, I would appreciate it if someone could volunteer to handle a small library. I'm thinking that duties would entail lugging a box full of books to the meetings and handling the check-outs and returns by members. Any interested person can let me know by e-mail or phone. We'll make arrangements.
Don't forget, our next regular meeting is Sunday, May 9 at the Unitarian Church. I'll be bringing my library of Freethought and Science books anyway. No doubt fun will be had by all.
