News for Oct 2003

Greetings, everyone!

It's been a tough week for a lot of us, I expect. But I wanted to send everyone a note, sort of keep us up to date on what's going on with the Association.

As planned, we met at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro last Sunday. We had planned to meet for just one hour, but we ended up talking for two hours, making some decisions and getting to know each other.

The main items we decided on were that we don't want (at least for now) a formal structure to the group, so we didn't hold any elections or anything like that. Everyone thought that the church was a good place to meet, and the cost of $25 per month is acceptable, so we have asked the church to put us on their calendar for the 2nd Sunday afternoon of each month for the forseeable future. We also decided to plan on a Winter Solstice dinner at a jolly nice restaurant, instead of holding a December meeting at the church. We're currently searching for an appropriately nice place with a separate room.

Wayne brought up the idea of field trips. There are lots of things going on around the area that might interest members of the group. For instance, there's the fuss down in Lexington over the "In God We Trust" motto; some expressed interest in going out to watch the movie "The Magdelene Sisters," a film about the abuses suffered at the hands of the Catholic Church in Ireland by many women over the past century and a half; there's often some interesting lectures going on at local universities and libraries. In short, we have many opportunities to enhance our experiences as Free Thinkers in North Carolina. As such, I'm planning to add some items to our calendar for such things as they come to my attenntion. Time permitting, I'll also send out notices to those who don't get e-mail. At a future meeting, we can discuss telephone notification for events that come up suddenly, if anyone's interested.

Our next meeting will be at 4:00 on Sunday, Oct. 12. I'm hoping we can bring some light snacks to enjoy while we hold our next meeting. I will be bringing a tape of a debate at this meeting. I hope everyone will come out and have a great time. As always, I'll be sure to send out e-mails to folks a few days in advance to remind them.

If you have any suggestions, questions or whatever, please feel free to e-mail me at any time.
